Build a Boat Challenge
For the past few weeks, our PREP group has been reading a novel called A Long Walk to Water. In a recent chapter, the main character had to create a boat to cross the Nile River. The group was tasked with creating a boat that could carry cookies (beads) without sinking. The challenge was increased because each building item (popsicle sticks, foil, etc) had a value. The task was to create the most cost effective boat that could bear the greatest amount of beads. The in person and virtual students really rose to the challenge.

Artmobile visits Brookwood
Artmobile’s newest STEAM exhibition, Marvelous Machines, integrates art, mechanical engineering, and physics into an interactive experience for all ages. Through a collaboration with the Mercer Museum, the exhibit presents historical examples of the six simple machines – lever, wheel and axle, pulley, inclined plane, wedge, and screw – then explores their use in elegant kinetic sculpture, whimsical pieces and conceptual artworks. Visitors will gain insight into the creative process in both art and science, understand the importance of play, risk-taking, and failure to drive discovery and innovation.
